Maria L. Mercado, Lubbock attorney, will be the keynote speaker at the 25th annual American GI Forum installation of officers banquet in Fort Stockton on Jan. 30.
The banquet will be held at 7 p.m. in the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church hall. Chapter Chairman Oscar G. Gonzalez will serve as a master of ceremonies for the event.
Ms. Mercado, wife of Texas Rural Legal Aid attorney Stephen McIntyre, is a graduate of the Antioch School of Law in Washington, D.C. She is assistant attorney general in the Consumer Protection Division of the Texas Attorney General’s Office, vice-chairman of the Mexican American Democrats of Texas, president of the Hispanic Women’s Network of Texas and serves on the Texas Advisory Board of the US Commission on Civil Rights.
In Lubbock she serves on the Lubbock Independent School District’s Hispanic Advisory Board, the board of directors of the Legal Aid Society of Lubbock, Inc., the board of directors for the Women’s Protective Services and the board for the League of Women Voters.
She was born in Mexico in 1953 and obtained American citizenship in 1976.
Another special guest invited to the banquet is the American GI Forum’s national chairman, Mario Diaz of Kansas City, Mo.
Richard Barajas, Fort Stockton attorney, will be installed as the Forum’s new chairman.
Guests also will include the delegates to the Lorenzo De Zavala Youth Conference of 1987.
